At BaselWorld 2017 Omega gave us the 60th Anniversary Trilogy watches, consisting of a Speedmaster, Seamaster and Railmaster inspired by the 1957 originals. While the Speedmaster is the collector's favorite, it is in fact the Railmaster hat stole my heart. In this post I'll explain why.
It's Clean
Out of the three watches, the Railmaster is by far the cleanest. Three hands, a simple case, and a brownish dial. There's no rotating bezel nor a tachymeter scale. At 38mm the case size is just about perfect. Vintage-esque yet not outdated. The dial is stripped down to its essentials yet still packs a punch through the shark teeth markers paired with the spiky hands. It looks just brilliant.
It's Modern
Underneath its retro appearance the Railmaster is thoroughly modern. It is motivated by caliber 8806, which sports all Omega's latest (and signature!) tech, like a Co-Axial escapement with silicon balance spring. This Master Chronometer movement powers the Seamaster 300 too, yet the Speedmaster uses the good-old caliber 1861. If you fancy a combination of vintage looks with the latest tech, go with the Railmaster. Or Seamaster of course :) .
It's Cool
The Railmaster is the underdog. Since its conception it has led a bit of a erratic life, with a resurrection here and there. It never quite became the fixture that the Speedmaster and Seamaster grew out to be. And don't we all love to root for the little guy?
