The Omega Speedmaster is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, and Omega has taken this opportunity to breath new life into the Speedmaster '57 collection. This series was introduced in 2013, blending elements of the original 1957 watch -such as the broad arrow hands and engraved bezel- with the latest in movement technology. The Speedmaster '57 is revised for 2022. It is now smaller, slimmer, and hand-wound.
The stainless steel case of the 2022 Speedmaster '57 measures 40.5mm across at a height of 12.99mm, down from 41.5mm and 16.5mm of the 2013 version. The reduction in height is partially achieved through the use of a new hand-wound movement in the form of caliber 9906. This hand-wound movement features a column-wheel actuated chronograph function and a co-axial escapement with silicon balance spring. The two barrels (mounted in series) furthermore give it a power reserve of 60 hours. It features a date function at 6:00, which is what sets it apart from the caliber 9908 used in the Chronoscope models.
The 2022 Omega Speedmaster '57 is available in four dial variations, each with either a stainless steel bracelet or vintage-style leather strap, which makes for a total of eight possible configurations. Looking for a vintage vibe? Have a look at the matte black dial, which has hour markers in a sandwich style which show the vintage Super-LumiNova from beneath. An added dose of modernity and flair is offered in the other variations, which sport rhodium-plated hour markers and a sunburst finish dial in either red, green or blue.
