Back in 2019 Omega announced something rather spectacular. As part of the Five Deeps Expedition of Victor Vescovo, one of its watches had reached the deepest point on earth. On april 28th of 2019 a DSV (Deep Submergence Vehicle) piloted by Vescovo reached a depth of 10.925 meters. Strapped to one of the operating arms on the outside of the vehicle was the Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional, a watch created especially for this mission. The carefully designed and engineered watch passed the test with flying colors. The Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional had gone where no watch had ever gone before. It is said that no more than three pieces of the 55*28mm behemoth were created. However, for 2022 Omega is back with a civilian version. Please Omega's new flagship dive watch, the 2022 Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep!
The 2022 Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep is available in seven variations, one of which is titanium, whilst six are stainless steel. In each case the diameter is 45.5mm at a height of 18mm and water resistance is rated at 600 bar. All are powered by the self-winding caliber 8912.
Looking for a watch that's closest to the 2019 prototype? The titanium version (215.92.46.21.01.001) is the way to go. The instrumental looks with near identical to its source of inspiration. It even features the distinctive 'Manta Lugs', where the bar is more or less integrated in the lugs for a highly robust design. The matte black dial is made of ceramised titanium, and the brushed black bezel insert is made of black ceramic.
The other versions of the 2022 Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep are even more civilised. First of all, the material used is called O-MEGASTEEL (yes, in caps), a new high-performance stainless steel alloy that is said to be both brighter in color as well as harder than regular steel. The case features a traditional lug and spring bar design, which allows the watch to be worn on either a stainless steel bracelet or a rubber strap. There are three dial variations; blue and grey with a gradient finish, or gloss black. All feature a polished ceramic bezel inlay, and a titanium medallion on the case back with laser-engraved sonar emblem and seahorse.
